# Image credits

Photographs served from getravel.co.il out of this repository. There are two
kinds: Commons photographs, each under the licence its row names, where
attribution is a condition of that licence, not a courtesy; and photographs
supplied by the site's owner.

Each file was opened and judged by eye before it was accepted. A filename is
a claim about a file, not its contents.

## What each photograph actually shows

- **The Beekman** — Exterior of the red terracotta Temple Court Building, which is the Beekman Hotel.
- **Hotel Edison** — Street-level facade with the HOTEL EDISON sign above the entrance, West 47th Street.
- **Resorts World Las Vegas** — Full exterior of the complex, Resorts World / Hilton / Conrad / Crockfords signage legible.

### Supplied but refused

- **The Beekman** — the photograph is a slender Art Deco tower with a castellated crown - that is BEEKMAN TOWER in Midtown East, not The Beekman downtown, which is the red terracotta Temple Court Building. Two different hotels sharing a name. Also only 333x500.
- **The Hoxton Williamsburg** — the right building, but 232x232. Unusable on a card. A larger copy would be taken gladly: this card still shows a room.
- **The Manhattan at Times Square** — supplied as .avif. No converter on this machine and not every browser renders it.

### Supplied but refused

- **Mama Shelter Los Angeles** — the building in the photograph is signed HOTEL SOUTH in yellow and reads as an architectural rendering rather than a photograph. Mama Shelter LA is a different building on Selma Avenue. WRONG PROPERTY.
- **Hotel Erwin** — the right building with clear signage, but 348x232. The card already carries a larger file. Send a bigger copy and it goes straight in.
- **The Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles** — the right tower, clearly labelled, but 363px wide against a larger file already on the card. No gain.

### Held back: portrait photographs lose their subject to the card crop

The card frame is `height:158px` at full width with `fit:cover`, so a tall
photograph keeps only its middle third. `image-slot` accepts `fit` and `shape`
and has no `object-position`, so the crop cannot be nudged per card.

- **The Ritz-Carlton, Los Angeles** (381x576) — THE RITZ-CARLTON sits in the top tenth and would be cropped away, leaving anonymous blue glass.
- **Mama Shelter Los Angeles** (2344x3840) — the neon rooftop sign is in the top tenth. The crop would show a blank white wall.

Both are the right buildings. They need a landscape crop, roughly 16:9.

## Cropped in-house to the card frame, 2026-08-09

The card image slot is `height:158px` at full width with `fit:cover`, about
2.25:1. A portrait photograph loses its top and bottom to that crop, which is
exactly where a hotel usually puts its name. These two were cropped to 2.25:1
with System.Drawing (no third-party tooling needed on Windows) and then OPENED
to confirm the sign survived.

A first attempt on Mama Shelter started 13% down the original and sliced the
top off the sign, hat and all. Starting at 7% keeps it whole. Look at the crop.

`.tools/crop-to-card.ps1` does this: pass the file and how far down the frame
should start.

## San Francisco photographs supplied by Eliran, 2026-08-09

Eight of these were portrait or square and were cropped to the card's 2.25:1
with `.tools/crop-to-card.ps1`, then opened again to confirm the sign survived.

### Supplied but refused

- **Hotel Kabuki** — the photograph is a view FROM a hotel balcony over Japantown; the hotel itself is not in the frame. The card already carries a photograph OF the building.
- **Hilton Union Square SF** — 357px wide, narrower than the card renders, and the card already carries a Wikimedia file that names the property. The card is also named "Hilton Union Square" without the SF.
- **The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco** — 311x162. Narrower than the card itself, against a larger file already installed showing the same Nob Hill facade.

## New York, second pass, 2026-08-09

### Supplied but refused

- **Hotel 50 Bowery** — the new file is the ROOFTOP TERRACE looking at the downtown skyline; the hotel is not in the frame. The card already shows the blue glass tower itself, from the first batch. Same call as Hotel Kabuki.
- **The Beekman** — this one IS the right property at last - the Victorian cast-iron atrium of Temple Court. But it is 516px and an interior, against the 1200px EXTERIOR of the same building already on the card. Kept the exterior. Say the word and it swaps.
- **The Hoxton Williamsburg** — still the same 232x232 file. The card continues to show a room.

## The held-back photographs, installed on request, 2026-08-09

Each had been held for a stated reason. Eliran asked for all of them to go in.
Each was cropped to the card's 2.25:1 and opened again first.

Three are worth knowing about later:
- **The Hoxton Williamsburg** upscales about 50% and will look soft. A larger copy replaces it in a minute.
- **Hotel 50 Bowery** and **Hotel Kabuki** now show a view FROM the hotel rather than the building. Both cards previously showed the building.

## Destination cards

It replaced a Commons file titled **"Exit via Main Street Backstage 4, Magic
Kingdom, Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida, USA.jpg"**. The title names the
right park, so every filename check this project ever ran would have passed it.
The photograph is the BACKSTAGE SERVICE YARD, and what the card actually showed
was a row of fire engines in a garage. Open the image.

It replaced **"Sky_over_Washington_Monument.JPG"**. The title names the
monument; the subject is the sky. The card showed clouds and sun rays.

Searching Commons for "White House" is a trap worth remembering: the first
page of results was cliff dwellings at Canyon de Chelly, a house in Sweden, a
Cornell University building and the Russian parliament in Moscow.

The site's owner uploaded these eight to its Wix media library (ids starting `336f53_`). They were
served from static.wixstatic.com until 29-Sep-2026 and are the same bytes, now served from here.
